Earlier this year, Milwaukee Film began rolling out its “Cinematic Sisterhood” series, a collaboration with the Women’s Fund of Greater Milwaukee that shines a brighter light on female voices in the movie industry. This Saturday brings a particularly influential voice to the city: director Rachel Talalay.
Talalay is the creative force behind cult classic Tank Girl, the final chapter of the classic Nightmare on Elm Street series run (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare) and several of the most beloved Doctor Who episodes, including the first installment of 2023’s 60th anniversary special. Two of those are confirmed as part of this weekend’s events at the Oriental Theatre, and a certain regenerating scientist with an affinity for police call boxes could figure into the plans as well:
- Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. — A screening of Tank Girl on 35MM film, followed by a Q&A with Talalay.
- Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. — “An Afternoon with the Queen,” which will serve as the marquee event of the weekend. It’ll include a screening of “one of her best-known television episodes,” a discussion of her career with clips of her work, and an opportunity to purchase an autograph afterward.
- Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. — A screening of Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, followed by a Q&A with Talalay.
“We are absolutely thrilled to bring Rachel Talalay to Milwaukee for two days of events as part of our ‘Cinematic Sisterhood’ series,” Milwaukee Film executive director Susan Kerns said in a release. “By working in genre film and television, Talalay has expanded representations of women in science fiction and action films while helping cultivate one of the most beloved horror series of all time. We’re excited to explore her work and just have a lot of fun.”
Tickets for all three events are on sale now via the links above and the Milwaukee Film website.
