Every week, the Milwaukee Music Premiere presented by The Cooperage connects the city’s artists with our listening audience. If you’re an artist with a track you’d like us to debut exclusively on Radio Milwaukee, head over to our Music Submission page to learn how.
Take a wide view of music’s modern era, and you’ll see a very large chunk of real estate dedicated to the three L’s: love, loss and longing. That trio has been responsible for not just individual songs or even whole albums. They’ve fueled entire careers.
In that regard, Christian Porter’s solo project Cosmic Lovechild is in its relative early days creating music indebted to the big three. This week finds him on the verge of releasing Cosmic Lovechild’s debut self-titled EP, which includes the song getting its premiere today, “Can’t Catch the Sun.”
The official bio for Cosmic Lovechild traces its conception “to the forefathers of R&B, rock ‘n’ roll and soul music.” The meat of that musical sandwich doesn’t get much attention on this track, although the other two elements are there in a big way. A silky beat and sultry guitar are fitting accompaniments to lyrics that focus on the “love” and “longing” members of the trio mentioned at the top as Porter lavishes metaphors on the object of his affection:
You’re the reason I believe every dream can come true
You’re the kiss of the kind that whispers a sweet tune
You’re a Sunday evening in the month of June
You got a hold on me like the stars and the moon
While the fixation seems healthy for the time being, it’s followed by a moment of self-realization that being happy isn’t an external pursuit. As Porter sings, “Deep within the mind resides the gold.”
You can listen to “Can’t Catch the Sun” using the player on this page, on 88Nine throughout today (8:30 a.m.; 12:30, 4:30, 8:30 and 11:30 p.m.) and on Cosmic Lovechild’s self-titled EP coming out this Saturday. That same day, the project will get a release show as part of Mad Planet’s MKE Music Night. Doors open at 9 p.m., with Cosmic Lovechild scheduled to take the stage at 11:40 p.m.
