For this Add of the Week, we truly can’t say more about legendary modern queen of soul Sharon Jones that hasn’t been said before.
Although long-departed, Jones has never gone far from our thoughts (and turntables). Recently, we got the joyful surprise of two newly unearthed songs that led 88Nine’s music team — and music lovers everywhere — to instantly plunk on our headphones, settle in and listen to the voice of an old friend.
Daptone Records just shared “Don’t Wanna Lose You” and “Don’t Give A Friend A Number,” both of which were recorded during Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’ sessions for 2017’s Soul of a Woman. Penned by “sax stalwart” and Daptone co-founder Neal Sugarman, "Don't Wanna Lose You" is a “heavy slice of soul sophistication teeming with groove and vibe,” as Daptone touts. We agree.
With a flourish of strings, this track is full of pathos-driven emotion and deep instrumentation, complete with backing vocals and the most important voice of the ensemble, Sharon Jones, offering comfort to those who’ve missed her musical presence.
