Every Monday, Add of the Week unveils all the new songs going into the 88Nine on-air playlist, with one hand-picked selection put in the spotlight by music director Erin Wolf.
London alternative rocker Nilüfer Yanya’s latest single, “Like I Say (I runaway),” runs steadily hot even through its quiet-loud-quiet-loud shifts, powered evenly by both acoustic and distorted electric guitar. The twin axe attack really ramps up the emotional shifts between tension and explosion, with lyrics that only add to the feeling created by a held-breath relationship:
The minute I'm not in control
I'm tearing up inside
And I can't stop you leaving
Is the biggest fear of mine
If I'm falling out with you
Yanya really plays with those emotions and exercises her love of the grunge and shoegaze genres on this one, and I’m super here for it. It’s quite the cathartic jam.
With the song (her first new one in two years), Yanya also announced her signing to the Ninja Tune label and reflected on this new point in her musical career underlined by the song’s delivery of its message. “‘Like I Say (I runaway)’ is about how you choose to spend your time,” she noted. “Time is like a currency, every moment. You’re never going to get it back. It’s quite an overwhelming thing to realize.”
