Immortal Girlfriend combine synth and slams in new video for ‘Calling’

Immortal Girlfriend’s chosen title as “The Dark Knights of Synth” has the most legs in a musical context. But, you gotta admit, it would make a pretty sweet name for a wrestling tag team. Plus, the entrance music handles itself.

That connection makes more sense when you find out that the Milwaukee duo of Kevin and William Bush are, as they put it, “mega pro wrestling fans” — something made very clear in their just-released video for “Calling.”

If you dig the squared circle like the Bush brothers (another decent tag-team name), you’ll recognize all the wrestling hallmarks they squeezed into this 270-second synth jam. From taunting interviews to table slams to title belts, you get the full match experience in the video, which starts with Immortal Girlfriend filling the role as ringside commentators — although not for long.

As the smooth track plays out, so does the storyline. A pretty standard wrestling match unfolds in front of the brothers, with Michael Allen Richard Clark playing the heel to “The Frontman” Jah-C. Shenanigans ensue that leave the referee incapacitated and Jah-C getting power slammed through the commentators’ table. Kevin Bush feels especially aggrieved by this outcome and takes it upon himself — with his brother’s help — to show Clark what’s what.

Punches, head slaps, crotch kicks, clotheslines and a devastating choke slam follow as Kevin ultimately hoists the championship belt.

What does any of that have to do with the song? Nothing! The lyrics read like a love story, with lines like, “We’ll stay until the dawn / From the look in your eyes / I’m never leaving your side.” But, when you have a video that’s this well-executed from a wrestling authenticity perspective, who really cares?

In addition to the video, you can find “Calling” on the album Sojourner, which is available now on Bandcamp and various other platforms.
