Every week, Kristopher Pollard from Milwaukee Film and Radio Milwaukee’s Dori Zori talk about movies — because that’s what you do when you’re Cinebuds.
Not too long ago, our cinematic duo turned their attention to a film director who might be having a bit of trouble shaking their trademark style. Coincidentally enough, this episode finds them focusing on a lensman who never struggles to do something … let’s use the term “offbeat.”
Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a big fan of subverting genre — a move he applied liberally to the alt-horror realm for many years (while kind of inventing the subgenre in the process). In Cloud, he takes it a step further by sort of subverting himself. Or maybe he subverts the movie itself about halfway through? Those last two sentences should give you an idea of what you’re in for with this one.
Without giving too much away, Cloud essentially pitches its established tone in the trash, starting as a quiet drama before switching gears (or entire vehicles) to an action-packed thriller that borders on the absurd. Yet it manages to stay locked on its message of capitalism being pretty much the worst.
