An emotion-packed double feature: ‘Hamnet’ and ‘No Other Choice’

Every week, Kristopher Pollard from Milwaukee Film and Radio Milwaukee’s Dori Zori talk about movies — because that’s what you do when you’re Cinebuds.

We’ve got a real value-for-your-money episode (which is really saying something considering the podcast is free) that doubles up our usual helping of movie chit-chat — amazingly, while still relying on just TWO hosts. Instead of the typical one in-depth review, you get a pair. And the pair we picked are both emotional roller-coasters, albeit of very different varieties.

Leading things off is a real tissue-grabber: the beautifully heartbreaking Hamnet from visionary director Chloe Zhao. Dori and Kpolly explore this historical-fiction tale of William Shakespeare’s family, featuring stunning performances by Jesse Buckley and Paul Mescal, plus a breakout turn by young Jacob Jupe. Be prepared for a symphony of sniffles as the hosts discuss how this film masterfully tackles love, grief and the special sauce that comes from a filmmaker’s personal connection to the material.

Then we go from depression to desperation as we talk about the Oscars’ biggest oversight: Korean dark comedy No Other Choice, which takes the activity of job hunting VERY literally. Despite rave reviews and a Golden Globe nomination, this "will he get away with it" thriller starring Lee Byung-hun was surprisingly snubbed by the Academy, and our hosts dig into all the reasons why the powers-that-be blew it on this one.

Plus, the buds share some deep cuts to add to your queue, including horror-comedy Dust Bunny and a vintage Lucille Ball thriller, Lured.
