Kinship Cafe gives new meaning to ‘full service’ at ThriveOn King

Kinship Community Food Center

Each week on This Bites, dining critic Ann Christenson from Milwaukee Magazine and Radio Milwaukee’s resident foodie Tarik Moody dig into the city’s culinary and restaurant culture to help you find new spots, old favorites and the best ingestibles around Milwaukee.

When we step into one of the city’s many eateries, we carry our expectations with us. It’s like you can already see the sandwich or coffee or elegantly plated dish in front of you before you even order it.

In other words, we expect a certain level of service.

“Service” is exactly what Kinship Cafe will provide when it opens later this fall at ThriveOn King, the community hub located on MLK Drive between Lloyd and Garfield. Although the level will go well beyond the average restaurant — something Ann and I discuss at the top of this episode.

The big difference-maker for the soon-to-open spot is its association with Kinship Community Food Center. The cafe will be a gathering place that serves healthy meals like sandwiches, bowls and salads. But it’ll also operate in conjunction with the center’s workforce training program, which provides opportunities to people who might otherwise struggle to find employment.

Taken together, everything about Kinship Cafe will happen in service to the center’s mission “to end hunger, isolation and poverty.” That’s a pretty lofty place to start this episode, which continues with some not quite as high-minded food news from around Milwaukee:

Despite ending on news like that, Ann and I hope we keep your spirits up as you listen from week to week. If you appreciate our efforts, think about leaving some kind words or an even kinder rating wherever you listen to This Bites. Thanks.
