In a world where discussions about mental health are increasingly vital, sharing stories that illuminate both the challenges and triumphs of navigating mental health is more important than ever. These narratives provide a genuine glimpse into what it means to grapple with mental-health struggles, reminding us we are not alone and that healing is always within reach.

Organizations like Black Space are at the forefront of creating safe environments for healing and support. Founded by passionate individuals dedicated to destigmatizing mental-health care, Black Space focuses on providing culturally competent resources for Black and Brown communities.

In this episode of Uniquely Milwaukee, we begin with Black Space co-founder Corey Fells, who emphasizes the detrimental effects of inadequate care, especially from a bad therapist. He explains how poor support can hinder progress and set individuals back on their healing journeys.

Next, we hear from Darius Smith, another co-founder of Black Space. As a father, Darius sought care not only for himself, but also to model a different path for his family. He shares how his experiences with mental health have shaped his approach to breaking generational cycles of silence and stigma.

Later in the episode, Dr. Lia A. Knox discusses the concept of cultural humility in mental-health care. She highlights the importance of understanding and respecting diverse cultural backgrounds in providing effective support, underscoring the need for mental-health resources that resonate with the communities they serve.
