Caloncho, born Óscar Alfonso Castro Valenzuela, is a singer-songwriter and musician from Guadalajara, Mexico. He began his musical journey with the drums and later transitioned to different instruments and songwriting. His music is known for blending tropical rhythms, reggae and traditional Latin sounds, creating a unique and refreshing style.
Inspired by artists like Bob Marley and Sublime, Caloncho has developed a distinctive sound characterized by warm, laid-back vibes and poetic lyrics. His debut EP, Homeotermo, released in 2013 garnered significant attention and set the stage for his first full-length album, Fruta, which received critical acclaim and multiple award nominations.
"Ánimo," from Caloncho’s 2024 project Tofu, continues to showcase his signature blend of soothing melodies and thoughtful storytelling. He is set to perform at this year’s Mexican Fiesta on the Henry Maier Festival Grounds on Aug. 23, alongside acts like Eslabon Armado, Dareyes De La Sierra, Tenampa Brass Band and more.
