I recently had the privilege of witnessing Cecilia Cassandra Peña-Govea, better known as La Doña, perform live at the legendary Cactus Club. Her mastery of the trumpet and heartfelt, soul-stirring vocals commanded the stage. It does the same on this episode of La Alternativa.
Despite the gloomy weather, a dedicated crowd gathered at Cactus Club to soak in her positive energy and evocative sound. La Doña’s seamless blend of cumbia, reggaetón and boleros captivated everyone, especially when she honored José Alfredo Jiménez with a moving rendition of "El Rey."
The audience’s spirited sing-along created an atmosphere of warmth and unity, making it an unforgettable night. We borrow some of that spirit as we start off this episode with the title track from La Doña’s latest album, Los Altos De La Soledad — a brilliant fusion of education, sexuality, activism and culture.
We also highlight some incredible Latin Grammy-nominated artists and celebrate Mon Laferte’s win for Best Alternative Music Album. Her experimental and daring project, Autopética, truly stands out in today’s music scene.
