La Alternativa: Artists like Trueno are shaping new sounds from Argentina

Courtesy of the artist

Every week, La Alternativa delivers the very best from the Latin alternative scene by curating a blend of emerging and established artists within the Latin diaspora, while providing a platform to champion our growing local music scene. Listen on demand here and on 88Nine from 10-11 p.m. every Wednesday.

This episode gave us the chance to dig into some fresh releases by The Animeros and Niko Rubio, but it was a collaboration from an Argentine rapper that really jumped out.

Trueno has been on a serious rise since winning both the Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos and Freestyle Master Series championships in 2019. Since dropping debut album Atrevido in 2020, he’s carved out a sound that blends sharp battle-rap roots with the pulse of Argentina’s culture.

Still just 24 years old, Trueno channels many voices from his homeland on his newest project, TURR4ZO. The 14-track album feels like a celebration and a reclaiming of Argentine working-class culture. “Turrazo” is Trueno’s exploration of the image of the “turro,” a young person from the barrio often stereotyped or dismissed. Instead, he elevates them with pride and heart.

Across the record, Trueno pulls from hip-hop, cumbia, electronic and classic Latin rhythms while paying homage to the sounds and people that shaped him. One standout moment comes through his collaboration with Milo J, another young Argentine artist helping redefine the country’s new generation of music.

The track carries an emotional weight beneath its cool confidence, balancing vulnerability with streetwise charisma. Together, Trueno and Milo J feel less like a feature pairing and more like a snapshot of a new generation of Argentine artists.
