Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
Fresh New York duo Clothing is formed by Aakaash Israni from Dawn of Midi and Ben Sterling from Mobius Band and the project called “Cookies.” This new team-up sees them calling in fun collaborators like former Dirty Projectors’ singer and guitarist Amber Coffman for their debut single, “Kingdom,” and now R&B artist L’Rain for their newest release, “Still Point.”
“After we heard L’Rain’s beautiful performance, we went back and rearranged the chorus to give her voice even more space,” Israni shared about the new song, which the pair call an “almost-ballad” that plays with L’Rain’s layered voice by wrapping it in tasteful synths. Sterling says “Still Point” is about love and devotion — and the fear of losing those things — all of which leaves a tangible impact.
Clothing’s debut album, From Memory, will be out July 26 on Water Level Records.
