Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
Cali psych rocker Ty Segall makes a quick comeback in 2025 with his latest album, which is also his 16th studio release (no big whoop) that follows last January’s Three Bells. For the new one, Possession, he enlisted longtime filmmaker and friend Matt Yoka to co-write lyrics and dream up the songs’ “tripped-up landscapes,” as he calls them.
One of the album’s highlights, “Buildings” is a surprising, slow-rolling rocker. Even minus Segall’s classic shredding guitar, the song still gets plenty heavy while leaning on bass, keys and percussion. It’s a very satisfying jam overall and promises a fun-filled set for Segall’s upcoming summer tour.
Find Possession out now and Segall at Chicago’s Salt Shed on July 11, as he opens for Primus on tour. You can also hear “Buildings” on our latest episode using the player at the top of the page, then make sure to come back to 88Nine at 2 p.m. every Sunday for a fresh batch of tunes on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
