Old schoolhouse to become senior housing at 20th & Vliet

A former Milwaukee elementary school might soon be revitalized, as plans are in the works to convert it to affordable senior housing.

McKinley Elementary School was located at 20th & Vliet St, and the building still stands, despite its old age. Built in 1885, it had seen a nearly century of students pass through its doors.
Milwaukee Public Schools sold it decades ago, and it was eventually acquired by a private day care.  It was open until 2013 when a fire completely compromised the building.

It has been empty since, although vandals and squatters have certainly left their marks.  These days, colorful (and, arguably, beautiful) graffiti can be found on the walls, while students' name tags still hang above coat hooks.
