What's next for the 'Button Block' building?

It has been home to restaurants, night clubs and office spaces, and today, the historic 1892 Button Block building is being developed into a new downtown Milwaukee hotel.

OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo walked through the busy construction site on Water and Clybourn streets where workers are converting the space to a 94-room extended stay Homewood Suites.

The former Joey Buona's space (and, let's not forget, Brett Favre's Steakhouse) has been vacant for a year, and the building will see new life when the hotel opens in May.

But looking back into the building's past, Tanzilo found a rich Milwaukee story  -- along with some hidden gems in the basement -- that have been there far longer than any of the more recent tenants.

Click the player below to learn more about the man who the building was named after and details about its future.

Visit OnMilwaukee to read Bobby's complete story and see video from his tour.
