It's hard to imagine Downtown Milwaukee without its popular Riverwalk. During the warmer months, it seems to always be buzzing with activity -- where else can you enjoy a meal outdoors then grab a selfie with the Bronze Fonz?
But the Riverwalk we see today doesn't much resemble some early proposals for the use of land. In fact, as OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo writes, it is possible large parts of downtown may not even exist had those plans come to fruition.
City leaders entertained all kinds of ideas over the years including lagoons and promenades, a potential water park and a children's zoo. One plan even called for the river to be paved over with concrete.
