A collective of local African American artists unveiled a new show Friday highlighting influential black Milwaukeeans, both past and present.
Urban Heroes, Urban Wood is the latest installation from the Fresh Perspective Art Collective.
The exhibit features painted portraits of each subject, with information printed alongside, explaining his or her accomplishments in Milwaukee.
And the "canvas" the artists used is a break from tradition -- they painted upon donated ash wood damaged by the emerald ash borer and reclaimed from Milwaukee streets.

Urban Heroes, Urban Wood is on view now at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society. Admission is free for members, $5 for the general public, and $4 for seniors and children.
The exhibit runs through March 17.
