Today it's the largest homeless shelter in the state, but the building that houses it has an even deeper history of community service.
The building at 830 N. 19th St., now home to Milwaukee Rescue Mission, was once a technical high school for young women, and before that, it was a "normal school."
So, what's a normal school? It was a post-secondary institution that prepared young people to become teachers in Milwaukee. In fact, that normal school would later relocate to Downer Ave., laying roots for the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee campus seen today.
OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo recently visited the building and joined me in studio to fill us in on its rich history.
