Urban Spelunking: North Point Lighthouse

While it no longer serves its original function, the Lake Park landmark offers an interesting window into Milwaukee's maritime past.

The North Point Lighthouse is the city's oldest surviving lighthouse. In operation from 1855 to 1994, it guided vessels to safety, under the watchful eye of its on-site caretaker.

It was moved and expanded in its lifetime, but the very top of the structure -- the light part of the lighthouse -- remains virtually unchanged more than 150 years later.

And these days, now the light has gone dark, the public is welcome inside.

The site has been transformed into a museum, complete with photos, memorabilia and fascinating exhibits.

OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo went inside for a tour, and joined me in studio to share his experience.
