On this week's podcast, Ann and I discussed Milwaukee Magazine's picks for the best food and restaurants of 2021, changes to the James Beard Awards and the return of the Great Midwestern Pie Championship.
Milwaukee Magazine recently shared food picks for its Best of Milwaukee issue. Categories included Best Cheese and Charcuterie Shop, Great Mobile Food Eats, Best Street Market Purveyor of Culinary Culture and more. The editor pick for Best New Restaurant was the amazing, La Dama, known for its creative and innovative Mexican dishes.
Next, we talked about the changes coming to next year's James Beard Awards. The culinary organization has made significant changes to the awards. One of them is chefs and restaurants that are nominated must show commitment to racial and gender equity, community, environmental sustainability and a culture where all can thrive. They also have announced it will be diversifying its judging committees.
Finally, The Great Midwestern Pie Championship will return on October 9 for its sixth year. Hosted by Honeypie Cafe, the championship is opened to amateurs and professional pie makers. There will be three categories for the contest including best pie with Wisconsin ingredients, best classic apple pie and best chocolate pie. Pies must be dropped off at Palomino by October 9 between 10 am and 12 pm. You must register online via Honeypie's website.
