This week, we are remembering the music of the late-great Gil Scott-Heron. After an eleven year hiatus, Gil came back in 2010 to release a brand new album of originals called I'M NEW HERE. This project was great for those who were unfamiliar with Gil's catalog. However, for those who know, Gil had some real gems throughout his career.
In 1980, Gil released the album REAL EYES on Arista. This album contained a list of greats, including the song "Legend In His Own Mind."
I first heard this track on Mos Def's track "Mr. Ni****" and then later that year, I heard it on Phife Dawg's solo album. Phife teamed up with Super Dave West of De La Soul on the track "Beat, Rhymes and Phife".
Great song, set to a great beat.
