Repairers of the Breach Expands Care for Homeless

Repairers of the Breach will open the newly renovated second and third floors of its building in May.

If anything was holding back the mission at Repairers of the Breach, it was a lack of usable space.

For many years, the daytime shelter operated out of a run-down building on 13th and Vliet.  The space itself has three floors, but the second and third levels -- simply put -- were a disaster.  The floors were unstable, paint was peeling from the walls, and leaky pipes and ceilings threatened the structural integrity of the whole building.

The conditions forced the shelter into the basement and ground floor.  But even that was a quick fix.  With demand for services increasing, staff was pushed beyond what it could handle on two floors.

But that was then.

Since 2005, Repairers of the Breach has been raising money and renovating the its building.  New paint, new windows, new floors, new -- everything.

Click the podcast player to hear from McCannon Brown, executive director and founder of Repairers of the Breach.

She explains what went into the expansion and how the new space will allow the shelter to help even more of Milwaukee's homeless.
