With a new home comes new neighbors! This winter, 88nine is exploring its new neighborhood of Walker's Point and showcasing the organizations making the community strong and diverse.
First up -- Walker's Point Center for the Arts.
With deep roots in the community -- 26 years to be exact -- the center has been connecting visitors with local artists and Mexican culture. It hosts art exhibitions, film screenings and performance art, all with a focus on the cultural diversity of Walker's Point.
WPCA also offers an active art education program for young artists. The center hosts drop-in art workshops for youngsters from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. It also works with schools where funding for art education has been reduced or cut in its "Site-On Hands-On" program, or So/Ho. Certified educators teach classic art techniques at schools or youth-serving agencies, all while tying in cultural awareness and discover.
And for more than 20 years, the center has been celebrating Dia De Los Muertos, with one of the city's largest art exhibitions focused on the Mexican holiday. It is on view now through November 16.
Right now, the center is in the middle of a capital campaign to fund its recent move to a new location at 5th and Walker Streets. Visit its official website for more about the campaign or its education programs.
