Why is polka such a big deal in Wisconsin?

If you're from Wisconsin, chances are you've heard or seen a polka performed.  It's our official state dance, after all.

But how did it get here?  Why is it such a longstanding tradition?  Are people still doing the polka today?

Those are a few of the questions Milwaukee artist/photographer Dick Blau researched in his new photo exhibit, Polka Heartland.  The series peeks into the world behind the famous dance, showcasing the unlikely places you'll find polka enthusiasts in Wisconsin.

The exhibit is on view now at the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend.
