Saturday's Summerfest lineup includes (from left) Kia Rap Princess, A Boogie Wit da Hoodie and Sean Paul.

Every morning throughout Summerfest 2023, we’ll deliver a guide that covers the day’s entertainment and how you can get in the gate free of charge. This is where you’ll find info about the AmFam Amp headliners, eclectic picks from our knowledgeable staff and the music lineup for the day (see the full 2023 Summerfest lineup here).

Today at the AmFam Amp

A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, 7:30 p.m.

As we approached the end of April, Summerfest’s biggest stage was light on hip-hop. Very light. Completely absent, actually. That got rectified with the addition of a quadruple bill topped by Bronx-bred rapper A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, with an undercard of Trippie Redd, City Girls and Milwaukee’s own Kia Rap Princess.

We usually use this space to tout the headliner, but for this one we’ll just encourage you to get there early and scream loud for KRP. The local talent blew away the crowd at our 15th birthday and was our guest on State of Sound just last week. Catch up on that episode right now, then catch her at the Amp tonight.

Radio Milwaukee staff pick #1 (and #2)

Gego y Nony @ Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard, 8 p.m.
Sean Paul @ Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard, 10 p.m.

Today is one of those days that fulfills the “circle the concert” at Summerfest dream for me. After much ballyhoo and beef around this year’s (and every year’s) lineup lacking diversity and representation, the silver lining has been found as Sean Paul brings his huge litany of reggae classics to Summerfest. When his “Scorcha” tour hits the Big Backyard, Paul will be in town for the first time in over a decade, and we deserve it. Gimme The Light!

Opening for Paul are the insanely talented and marvelous Milwaukeeans Gego y Nony — crown jewels of the reggaeton and Latin music world here, and they’ll surely go “100MPH” for one of their biggest hometown gigs. Also, shout out to 88Nine’s Kenny Perez, DJ for Gego y Nony and a premier talent in his own right. Again, gimme the light!

Radio Milwaukee staff pick #3 (and #4 and #5)

A Flock of Seagulls, Information Society, Wang Chung @ UScellular Connection Stage

Last year, I told you to see ’80s icon Howard Jones, and that ended up being my favorite show at Summerfest 2022. So trust me when I implore “everybody have fun” Saturday night at the USCellular Connection Stage for a full lineup of English new wave.

After Los Angeles-based STRANGELOVE, a Depeche Mode cover band, kicks things off at 5 p.m., we get to the heavy hitters at 6:30 p.m. with Wang Chung, who I give major kudos for working the band name into one of their hit songs (see below). The 8:15 p.m. slot asks “What’s on Your Mind” with Information Society, a late replacement for previously scheduled Jesus Jones. Don’t run (so far away) after that set because A Flock of Seagulls headlines the stage at 10 p.m. Bring on the synth!

How to get in free today

Summerfest Military and First Responder Appreciation Day with Generac

All active-duty military personnel, veterans, police, fire and EMT — plus up to four family members — receive free admission between noon and 6 p.m. Just go to any gate and present a valid military ID, copy or photo of a DD-214 form, driver’s license with Veteran classification, law enforcement or fire department agency-issued credentials, or police/fire union card with photo ID.

Northwestern Mutual “Make a Child Smile” Day

If you’re a parent, you probably have a bunch of books lying around that don’t get read as much these days. Today’s your chance to put those gently used books to better use by donating them (new ones are appreciated, too) at the Mid Gate Promotions Booth. If they meet the $10 minimum value, you get a free admission ticket good for the day and time of the promotion.
