Summerfest on Monday polished off its second full weekend at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater by announcing that The Killers will headline Friday, June 27.

The Las Vegas-based quartet will play the day after country star Lainey Wilson (June 26) and the day before the hip-hop twin bill of Megan Thee Stallion and Flo Milli (June 28). Summerfest’s opening weekend at the Amp is also completely spoken for, with Def Leppard and Tesla on June 19, Hozier and Gigi Perez on June 20, and James Taylor and Jason Mraz on June 21.

The Killers were last in Milwaukee during the 2019 festival and headlined the amphitheater for that show as well. In his piece for the Journal Sentinel, Erik Ernst painted what has become a typical picture for the band’s live shows: “... the crowd was out-singing Flowers as blinding lights brought the teeming masses together with the band as one, like they had already been all night.”

That’s how it’s supposed to work when you’re one of the biggest rock bands on the planet — a title The Killers began building right out of the gate with their sextuple-platinum debut record, Hot Fuss. Tracks like “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me” were the foundation of their singalong supply, which only grew from there to include “When You Were Young,” “Human” and “Runaways.”

The band hasn’t been afraid to stretch their creativity, either. Seventh studio album Pressure Machine marked a fairly significant departure for The Killers and was structured as a concept record pulled from frontman Brandon Flowers’ upbringing in Nephi, Utah. While they had occasionally drifted into heartland rock territory on previous albums, Pressure Machine hit that nail squarely on the head and pulled inspiration from Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and John Prine.

That remains their most recent collection of new material, although you can imagine the live show still relying mostly on the six albums that came before to create the bombastically high-energy environment The Killers are known for.

Tickets for the June 27 show at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. this Friday, Jan. 31, online via Ticketmaster and at the Amp’s box office. There are also a handful of presale opportunities you can learn more about on the event’s webpage.
