Each week on This Bites, dining critic Ann Christenson from Milwaukee Magazine and Radio Milwaukee’s resident foodie Tarik Moody dig into the city’s culinary and restaurant culture to help you find new spots, old favorites and the best ingestibles around Milwaukee.
Being called “bougie” is … well, it’s not usually good. But, as with most labels, owning it can often flip the situation. One Milwaukee food haven has decided to embrace the term for an upcoming anniversary, and that’s where our culinary roundup starts for this episode.
It’s relatively safe to say that Saint Kate - The Arts Hotel has a place somewhere in the “bougie” universe. The downtown spot carries the comforts of an elevated lifestyle with elements of luxury throughout the experience of visiting. So as part of its fifth anniversary, the hotel has arranged a “Bougie Brunch” in the appropriate swanky surroundings of The Dark Room restaurant.
The dining experience taking place at 11 a.m. this Saturday, June 29, is named appropriately given everything it offers: a four-course meal with canapes tacked onto the front end and a dessert trio as a finale (so six courses?). Throughout, you’ll find ingredients like caviar, lobster and Kurobuta pork — bougie, indeed — as well as more accessible entries like Korean fried chicken and creamy green chile grits.
The whole thing will run you $125 and is available to book right now … if you’re feeling bougie. Moving on to the more down-to-earth portion of Milwaukee’s food news:
- We take a quick trip to the world of sausage (including how it’s made) in honor of a more in-depth piece in the current issue of Milwaukee Magazine.
- There’s a pop-up coming to SmallPie in Bay View on July 3, when you’ll be able to grab fresh peaches, pecans and pistachios.
- A new lao restaurant will move into the former Phan’s Garden space on National Avenue next to the Lao Buddhist Temple.
We went on for quite a bit in our last episode, but we’re back to keeping things short and sweet for you. If you’re feeling sweet on us, think about leaving a review wherever you listen or telling a foodie friend about This Bites. Thanks.
