Each week on This Bites, dining critic Ann Christenson from Milwaukee Magazine and Radio Milwaukee’s resident foodie Tarik Moody dig into the city’s culinary and restaurant culture to help you find new spots, old favorites and the best ingestibles around Milwaukee.
There have been any number of deserving tributes rolling in since the death of Milwaukee legend Bob Uecker, from an endless string of kind words to the jersey patches and other touches the Brewers have added for the 2025 season. One thing we haven’t seen much of is culinary nods to the Hall of Famer — something that will be rectified next Monday.
To start off this episode, Ann and I dig our metaphorical spoons into Kopp’s creamy tribute to Uecker: a new flavor titled, what else, “Mr. Baseball.” The concoction the custard stand came up with is caramel malt custard topped with beer nuts, fudge-covered peanuts and “a splash of Miller Lite.”
Obviously, this one isn’t for kids, and you don’t need to be in the front row to get it. You do, however, need to be at Kopp’s next Monday, March 31, because the flavor is a one-day-only deal to coincide with the Brewers’ home opener against the Kansas City Royals. On top of that, 20% of the sales from “Mr. Baseball” (a nod to Uecker’s career .200 batting average) will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
We’ve got the scoop on the rest of Milwaukee’s recent food news, including:
- Ann’s quick chat with two of the city’s servers, who share a few thoughts on what makes a good guest.
- The various events planned for what’s sure to be a corking (ha) second annual Milwaukee Wine Weekend.
- Another Milwaukee Magazine piece from Ann, this one about Pomeroy, which recently started pouring in Walker’s Point.
- Big Daddy’s BBQ is getting a new owner (Donte Lee), a new name (Big Boss BBQ) and an expanded menu.
- Just in time for April Fools’ Day, Crafty Cow will recreate fast-food favorites inspired by the likes of Taco Bell and Panda Express.
Ann and I are pretty confident we don’t need to recreate anything to be your favorite, but however you feel about us (hopefully good), let us know by leaving a review wherever you listen to This Bites. Thanks.
