Bay View venue Cactus Club has always been home to DIY artists like Fake My Death.

They lift your spirits, prompt you to think, make you feel grateful and inspire you to do more. They connect you to our community, shining a spotlight on what's good about our city. They're stories that are Uniquely Milwaukee, sponsored by the Milwaukee Public Library.

Milwaukee is a place filled with creatives, especially in the city’s music scene. We’re home to dozens of independent artists and bands who’d rather do it their way than rely on a mainstream framework.

We dipped into Milwaukee’s DIY subculture in part one, as former Radio Milwaukee intern and current freelancer Jonathan Joseph introduced us to Fake My Death, an alt-rock/punk band whose members mixed their own styles to create a sound all their own. They showed us the balance that the vast majority of Milwaukee artists need to strike — between their creative pursuits and the not-quite-so-flashy “day jobs” fueling those efforts.

In part two, Jonathan pulls back the curtain on a part of Milwaukee’s DIY scene more visible to fans and music lovers: the venues that support these musicians. You’ll hear his conversation with Kelsey Kaufmann, owner of Bay View’s beloved Cactus Club (and a DIY musician in her own right), and then drop in on a show as Fake My Death take the stage.
