How this food pantry is making Milwaukee healthier

This week on In The Wings, we're exploring local food philanthropy.

Safe to say, there aren't many in Milwaukee who know more about the topic than Hunger Task Force Executive Director Sherrie Tussler.

She says the Task Force relies on its hundreds of partners in the community -- including 56 food pantries, 20 soup kitchens and more than 120 public senior housing and meal sites -- to deliver healthy and dignified meals to those in need.

We asked her to identify one of the Task Force's smaller partners making a big impact.

She said, without hesitation, the Riverwest Food Pantry.

It operates out of two locations, offering food free of charge to neighbors, twice a week.

It's a mission-driven organization with a focus on healthy food, and it's one of the few food pantries in the area to implement the U.S.D.A. MyPlate guidelines in its service to the community.

"They're going to make sure that if you go to their food pantry, you're only going to get really good food.  And you're going to get it in a combination necessary for yourself and your family members to be healthy," Tussler said.

I recently visited the pantry and met with Executive Director Vincent Noth.  He shared more about its dedication to healthy food in a community where he says many residents are living in poverty.
