A few words of appreciation for great (and Grate) barbecue

Each week on This Bites , dining critic Ann Christenson from Milwaukee Magazine and Radio Milwaukee’s resident foodie Tarik Moody dig into the city’s culinary and restaurant culture to help you find new spots, old favorites and the best ingestibles around Milwaukee.

Seven years ago, I visited Aaron Patin at his new spot on South Howell. As an appreciator of barbecue, I had to talk to this guy who developed his own Milwaukee-style cut of rib in an effort to create a brand of barbecue particular to our city.

He called his place Iron Grate BBQ. It moved around to a couple brick-and-mortar locations, but the high-quality offerings were constant. Of course, the restaurant business being what it is, even the highest-quality place can end up closing its doors. Unfortunately, that’s the fate of Iron Grate BBQ, which will serve for the last time Sunday, Nov. 20.

Ann and I start this episode by eulogizing Patin’s restaurant while pointing out that you still have time to appreciate the mission he set out to accomplish.
