Mad Jazz Samples

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning here on 88NINE, we explore the world of sampling. Regardless of genre, era, or style, if the song uses a sample; we break the track down and connect the musical dots.

This week on 7 o'Clock Sample, we are exploring the diverse sample library of one of Hip Hop's most influential producers...

MADLIB.

Madlib, is the man behind some of the west coast's best musical projects.  Lootpack, Quasimoto, Yesterday's New Quintet, Jaylib and the Beat Konducta tapes.  In 2003, Madlib was approached by Blue Note Records to create Shades of Blue.  This album features original Blue Note recordings, some remixed and resampled, and some replayed by Madlib, as well as rapping by M.E.D. aka Medaphoar.

This project features some of Madlib's best work.  It's a combination of a mixtape, jazz album, beat tape, and rap project.

The first track on the album is called Slim's Return.

This track highlights Madlib's unique approach to sampling and remixing.  Madlib doesn't always do what you would expect him to do.  That's what so many of us love about him.

Take a listen to the original sample, and see how little Madlib tweaked it...
