Michelle Zauner’s last visit to Summerfest as Japanese Breakfast in 2023 came toward the end of a pretty stellar couple of years, touring off the success of 2021 album Jubilee and throwing a best-selling memoir (Crying in H Mart) on top of it. On Tuesday, she announced a return to the festival in 2025 that will feature the follow-up to that Grammy-nominated record.
After playing the General Power Stage last time around, Zauner will slide over to the BMO Pavilion this summer to headline the lineup for Summerfest’s first Saturday, June 21.
By the time Japanese Breakfast take the stage, fans will have had a couple months to soak in the new album, which is titled For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women) and will arrive March 21. Zauner is already prepping her audience for a tonal shift from Jubilee’s bright and poppy leanings to something moodier that stems from the breakout success of her 2021 album.
“I felt seduced by getting what I always wanted,” Zauner said in a release. “I was flying too close to the sun, and I realized if I kept going I was going to die.”
Moody, indeed.
Lead single “Orlando in Love” is out now for your listening enjoyment (and embedded below) as you ponder your ticket options for Japanese Breakfast’s headlining gig at BMO Pavilion on June 21. There will be, of course, the usual first-come-first-served option for general admission the day of the show. But if you want to snag a reserved seat, those go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. this Friday, Jan. 10, online via Ticketmaster and at the Summerfest box office.
