After 24 years, Everything But The Girl returns with a bang(er)

Every Monday, “Add of the Week” unveils all the new songs going into the 88Nine on-air playlist, with one hand-picked selection put in the spotlight by a member of our music team.

This is the text I got from former 88Nine Music Director Justin Barney as we both had “Nothing Left to Lose,” the new track from Everything But The Girl, on repeat in our headphones:

This message perfectly captures why this song is so special. The duo’s first new music in 24 years could have sounded dated, relying on ’90s alternative music nostalgia and connecting only with my generation. Instead, this song feels current and relevant, capturing the attention of my pal Justin as well.

The wife-husband duo of Tracey Thorne and Ben Watt still have chemistry and a bit of magic. I can’t imagine what kind of pressure there is releasing new music after decades of working to get the rights to your old songs back and releasing mostly reissues. I can’t wait for the new 10-song album FUSE to arrive in April so we all can dig in and see where this new record transports us. In the meantime, I would not mind if Tracey Thorn sang me bedtime stories. Her voice still gives me the feels.

You can listen to “Nothing Left to Lose” here and on 88Nine by tuning your FM dial in Milwaukee, or streaming worldwide on our website and mobile app.
