Milwaukee's biggest rap stars are playing this summer kickoff concert

This week Lakeyah made Milwaukee rap history by becoming the first Milwaukee rapper ever to place on XXL Magazine's prestigious Freshman Class list. The city won't have to wait long to celebrate that accomplishment with her. On Saturday, June 26, she's co-headlining a concert at the Wisconsin State Fair Grounds called We Outside with Alabama rap star Yung Bleu.

Those two performers alone ensure that's going to be a big show, but We Outside's loaded opening lineup seals the deal. The concert, which was booked by DJay Mando, also features some of the biggest names in Milwaukee rap, including several who have led the local scene's recent resurgence. Solowke, Gwapo Chapo and Chicken P (the rapper formerly and sometimes still known as Lil Chicken) were three of the artists who helped lift the ceiling on the Milwaukee rap scene during the late '10s, each scoring locals hits that have done millions of views on YouTube. Their influence is already baked in the DNA of Milwaukee rap.

We discuss them on this week's episode of Tap'd In. You can stream the episode, as well as some of their music, below.

We've got you. This spring we shared the oral history of "Teach U How 2 Jack," one of the city's biggest club hits of the '10s, and discussed why this is shaping up to be a landmark summer for Milwaukee rap. We also shared the excellent new WebsterX single, interviewed The Oshi and Mudy, and wrote about the return of 54 Baby Trey, the new Browns Crew track and Wave Chapelle's new "Friday Freestyle" video.
