Each week on This Bites, dining critic Ann Christenson from Milwaukee Magazine and Radio Milwaukee’s resident foodie Tarik Moody dig into the city’s culinary and restaurant culture to help you find new spots, old favorites and the best ingestibles around Milwaukee.
To succeed as a restaurant in Milwaukee, all of your food needs a certain ingredient that starts with the letter “S.”
Salt? Nope.
Cilantro? Wrong letter.
We’re talking about soul, of course. If you’re not putting that into your dishes, you’ve got no hope. Fortunately, there’s an entire section of the culinary community so devoted to that belief, it’s right in the name — and at the top of this episode of This Bites.
Milwaukee’s got some excellent soul-food restaurants, and there’s never been a better time to visit them. Throughout the month of May, the Black Chamber of Commerce and Jammin’ 98.3 are putting on the Soul Food Tour MKE, with a different restaurant offering a $10 special just about every weekday this month.
Next week alone, you can get that deal from Quick Bite on Tuesday, Big Daddy’s BBQ and Soul Food on Wednesday, Top Corned Beef on Thursday and Food Thru Your Soul on Friday. For updates as the month goes along, take a look at the event webpage. As for what else we’re looking at in this episode:
- Ann quite simply will not let this Top Chef thing go, so we’ll keep letting her do these recaps, which this time follows the show to Discovery World.
- Midwest SAD isn’t just a regionally specific emotion; it’s also a bakery with a new downtown home.
- North Avenue Market will introduce its new restaurant, Christopher’s Southern Kitchen & Bar, during a weeklong open house June 4-9.
- An Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Tasting Dinner will take place May 19 at The Ivy House, hosted by Marquette’s Lubar Center.
- SHARP Literacy will hold their annual “Unwrapped MKE” event May 30, giving chefs a chance to turn Mickey D’s into something delicious.
