Each week on This Bites, dining critic Ann Christenson from Milwaukee Magazine and Radio Milwaukee’s resident foodie Tarik Moody dig into the city’s culinary and restaurant culture to help you find new spots, old favorites and the best ingestibles around Milwaukee.
Food can take you to a lot of different places — sometimes figuratively and sometimes literally. Ann and I focus on the first one as our own figurative trip around Milwaukee’s food scene gets started in this episode.
The destination for the upcoming event in question is Alaska, and the good news is you only need to go as far as South 2nd Street for a taste of The Last Frontier (which is Alaska’s nickname, I just found out right now). Braise is the local restaurant putting together this far-flung menu of four courses that prominently feature the seafood available way, way up north:
- Smoked Salmon served with Everything Pizza Crisps, Goat Cheese and a Cherry Tomato Salad with Scallion Oil & Crispy Capers
- Mustard Crusted Halibut accompanied by Green Tomato Chutney, Marinated Cucumber and Quinoa & Shallot Lime Vinaigrette
- Seared Salmon with Heirloom Tomato~Aji Melocoton Pepper Salsa and Cotija Huarache
- Strawberry Rhubarb Ricotta Cake with Smoked Alaskan Sea Salt
The “Alaska Fresh 4 Course Dinner,” as Braise calls it, takes place at 6 p.m. next Wednesday, July 31, and is available to book right now. Let’s see where else our conversational journey takes us:
- Over in Lake Country, the Bartolotta Restaurants opened its latest location, called The Commodore.
- At the Milwaukee Public Market, you only have a couple days to enjoy Pat’s Rib Place before it closes to pursue retail opportunities.
- On the north end of Water Street, Birch will host fresh oyster pop-ups in a nod to owner Kyle Knall’s childhood on the Gulf Coast.
- Finally, up in Kohler, tickets went on sale for the annual Food & Wine Festival, which this year will welcome Andrew Zimmern and Maneet Chauhan.
As we bring this episode in for a landing, I just want to say that Ann and I know you have many options for your audio-culinary-travel needs, and we appreciate you choosing This Bites. Thanks for joining us, and have a pleasant stay wherever it is you are.
