Hip Hop Architecture Camp goes virtual for Milwaukee students

As some of you may know, I practiced architecture in a past life before my career in radio and media. I'm a graduate of Howard University School of Architecture and I believe my education in architecture and design prepared me for my professional life especially in my current career at 88Nine Radio Milwaukee. Learning about design gave me a unique way to tackle problems. Some people now call it design thinking.

That is why I believe young students should get a taste of architecture. Milwaukee-area middle school and high school students have an opportunity to get a taste of architecture education I received via my friend Michael Ford and his amazing Hip Hop Architecture Camp all throughout February.

Founded by Ford, The Hip Hop Architecture Camp positions hip-hop culture as a catalyst to introduce underrepresented youth to architecture, urban planning and design. The camp has been taking place all over the country and it is based in Madison.

During each Hip Hop Architecture Camp, participants learn how to write and record a track based on their observations, critiques and visions for their communities.

According to their website, The Milwaukee Hip Hop Architecture Camp is free for Milwaukee area middle school and high school students. During these four sessions, students will be joined by special guests, including hip-hop artists and architects for a chance to win special prizes from Nike, Beats by Dre and Giftcards.

The camp will be virtual and take place every Saturday in February starting on Feb. 6. There will be a program celebration on March 6. Registration closes on Jan. 31. You can learn more and register over at the Hip Hop Architecture Camp website.
