Black Panther digs deep into GRRL Power, politics and Afrofuturism

Black Panther

Marvel's Black Panther has already exceeded all of Hollywood's expectations. In its opening week, the film brought in over $242 million domestically and $427 million worldwide, shattering box-office records. Beyond amazing sales, the movie has been met with a whirlwind of praise from social and cultural tastemakers all over the web.

Listen to the podcast below.
After opening weekend, Tarik and I sat down to talk about the film. We discussed themes of Afrofuturism, GRRRRL Power, and how the themes in the movie address real life issues we face each day.

Directed by African-American director Ryan Coogler, Black Panther has become more than your traditional superhero flick.  The film has redefined how blacks are portrayed on the screen especially when it comes to big budget movies.  Black Panther fused the mythology of Marvel comic book character with themes of isolation, colonization, pride, family, gender roles and more.  A first of its kind in this genre.

With the success of the film, what does this mean for future films highlighting people of color? Will Black Panther make an impact beyond the screen?
