'Won't You Be My Neighbor' has the power to bring us together—and to make us cry

88Nine’s Justin Barney and Milwaukee Film’s Kpolly are buds, they like cinema—they’re Cinebuds. This week on the podcast, we’re doing a review of “Won't You Be My Neighbor,” the Mr. Rogers documentary now playing in Milwaukee.

Read more and listen to the full episode below to hear us talk about what made Mr. Rogers and this movie so special as we try not to cry all over again on the podcast.

"Won't You Be My Neighbor" review

We've already admitted that even the trailer for this movie made us cry, making it one of our most anticipated movies of the summer.

"Won't You Be My Neighbor" is a glimpse of hope and empathy that has been so well-received, partly because of our current times, partly just because Fred Rogers was just that magnificent of a person. This movie, along with Mr. Rogers himself, were all about kindness. It's something our world can certainly use more of right now.

We went to the theater with our hearts on their sleeve for this one. From seeing Mr. Rogers interact with Koko the gorilla to hearing him sing and give his thoughtful speeches, we cried so many happy tears witnessing how truly sweet and honest he was.

Today we have terms like emotional intelligence, mindfulness, slow TV and slow culture, but "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" did all those things first. His show was a true exercise in teaching us empathy as children. Now, "Won't You Be My Neighbor" reminds us as adults to be good to each other and has the power to bring a lot of people together over Fred Rogers' memory, even in our country's divided times.

Listen to the full episode above for more on "Wont You Be My Neighbor" and an update from Kpolly on what's happening next at the Oriental Theatre.
